What AutoRamp and EPR Do on the ResMed AirSense 10

A plain explanation of AutoRamp and Expiratory Pressure Relief on the AirSense 10 AutoSet, and who decides how they are set.

What AutoRamp and EPR Do on the ResMed AirSense 10

The ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet lists two comfort features that people often ask about by name: AutoRamp and Expiratory Pressure Relief, usually shortened to EPR. Both change how the pressure feels, not what your prescribed pressure is. This article explains what each one does in plain terms, and where the decisions about them are made.

One point before we start. Whether AutoRamp or EPR is switched on, and at what level, is part of your settings. Those settings come from your doctor or sleep clinic. We can show you where the features sit on the machine, but we do not choose them for you.

What a ramp is

A CPAP machine delivers air at a pressure set for you. Some people find it awkward to fall asleep with that full pressure from the first breath. A ramp is a period at the start of the night when the machine runs at a lower pressure, then builds up towards the prescribed level.

How AutoRamp differs from a timed ramp

A basic ramp runs for a fixed length of time. AutoRamp is ResMed's version that is designed to wait until the machine detects that you have fallen asleep before it moves up to the full pressure. The idea is that the lower pressure lasts as long as you are still settling, rather than for a set number of minutes.

What you notice at the bedside

In practice, the air feels softer when you first put the mask on and lie down. If the ramp is not switched on, the pressure starts at the level in your settings straight away. Neither approach is "right" in general. Your clinic picks what suits your plan.

What EPR does

Breathing out against a steady stream of air can feel like pushing against a breeze. Expiratory Pressure Relief eases the pressure slightly while you breathe out, then returns it as you breathe in. The machine follows your breathing to do this.

EPR levels

EPR comes in levels, from off to a small number of steps. A higher level means a slightly larger reduction during each breath out. The level is a setting like any other, so it belongs to your doctor or sleep clinic. If breathing out feels uncomfortable, tell them rather than changing it yourself.

Where EPR applies

Depending on how the machine is set, EPR can work during the ramp only or throughout the night. That too is part of the settings your clinic chooses.

How the two features work together

AutoRamp shapes the start of the night. EPR shapes each breath out. They are separate settings, so one can be on without the other. Together they are the main reason some people describe the AirSense 10 AutoSet as feeling gentler, but how it feels for you depends on your own settings and your mask.

Other features that sit alongside them

  • SmartStart: therapy can begin when you breathe into the mask, so you do not need to press a button after lying down.
  • Climate Control: works with the integrated humidifier to manage the moisture in the air you breathe.
  • Wireless connectivity: some clinics use it to follow therapy data. Ask yours if they do.

Does the AirStart 10 have them

AutoRamp and EPR are listed for the AirSense 10 AutoSet. They are not listed for the AirStart 10, which is built around simple controls: plug in, press Start. If your clinic has asked for either feature, that points towards the AirSense 10 AutoSet. The mask matters as much as the settings

Comfort features help with how the air feels, but a mask that leaks or presses in the wrong place will be felt more. If something feels off, it is worth checking the mask fit as well as raising the settings with your clinic. Our mask section covers the AirFit N20, F20 and P30i.
