AirStart 10 vs AirSense 10 AutoSet: A Feature-by-Feature Look

How the ResMed AirStart 10 and AirSense 10 AutoSet differ in controls, comfort features, humidification and stated prices.

AirStart 10 vs AirSense 10 AutoSet: A Feature-by-Feature Look

Two of the ResMed machines we list look alike on a shelf. The AirStart 10 and the AirSense 10 AutoSet are both auto-adjusting CPAP machines (APAP), and both come with humidification built in. The difference lies in how much each one does for you, and in what you pay to buy or rent it.

This guide walks through the two machines feature by feature, using only what we can state plainly. Your pressure settings are not part of the comparison. Those come from your doctor or sleep clinic, whichever machine you choose.

The short version

The AirStart 10 is the simpler machine. You plug it in, press Start, and it runs. The AirSense 10 AutoSet adds a set of comfort and convenience features on top: AutoRamp, Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR), Climate Control, SmartStart and wireless connectivity.

Simple controls

The AirStart 10 is built around one idea: there is very little to set up at the bedside. Once your settings are in place, the routine is to fill the water tub, fit the mask, and press Start. People who do not want to learn a menu often like that.

Humidification included

The HumidAir humidifier is part of the machine and has its own water tub. You do not need to buy a separate humidifier unit, though the tub itself is a part you will look after and eventually replace.

Cost to get started

Purchase starts from RM4,500. If you would rather try a machine first, rental is RM280 a month with an upfront payment of RM800. Instalment plans for the AirStart 10 are confirmed on WhatsApp, so ask before you plan around one.

Comfort features

AutoRamp lets the machine start at a lower pressure and build up as you settle. EPR eases the pressure a little as you breathe out. Whether these are switched on, and at what level, is something your doctor or sleep clinic decides along with your other settings. We cover both in more detail in our guide to AutoRamp and EPR.

Climate Control and SmartStart

Climate Control works with the integrated humidifier to manage the moisture in the air you breathe. SmartStart means therapy can begin when you breathe into the mask, so there is no button to find in the dark.

Wireless connectivity

The AirSense 10 AutoSet has wireless connectivity. Some clinics use this to follow a patient's therapy data. Ask your clinic whether they use it before you count it as a reason to choose this model.

Cost to get started

Purchase starts from RM6,500. You can also pay RM600 × 12 months with no credit card, or rent at RM450 a month.

Questions that usually settle the choice

  • Has your doctor asked for a specific comfort setting? If EPR or ramp settings are part of the plan, the AirSense 10 AutoSet is the one that lists them.
  • Who will use the machine? For someone who wants as few buttons as possible, the AirStart 10 keeps the routine short.
  • How do you want to pay? The AirSense 10 AutoSet has a stated no-credit-card instalment plan. The AirStart 10 has the lower rental and purchase starting points.
  • Do you want to try before you commit? Both can be rented. Part of the rental can count towards buying later; how much is confirmed on WhatsApp.

Do not forget the mask

Neither machine includes a mask in the prices above. Masks are sold separately, from RM600 for the mask only. Look at the mask options once you have narrowed down the machine, because the mask is the part you will notice most each night.

Getting either machine delivered

Delivery covers all of Malaysia, and how and when it happens is arranged on WhatsApp. Families comparing machines for a parent in Petaling Jaya, Ipoh or Kuching follow the same steps: tell us the model, whether you want to buy or rent, and for how long, then pay by online banking.
